Mike Brewer on how Edd China left Wheeler Dealers

Footage of Mike Brewer has popped up on YouTube this week, in which he revealed details as to how Edd China left Wheeler Dealers. In the video, filmed at the Klingberg Vintage Motor Car Festival in Connecticut, Brewer says Edd turned out to be ‘not gracious’.

“He did some very bad things,” Brewer said. “And when he did some very bad things it meant that Discovery channel just couldn’t work with him. So they gave him the option to leave, and he took it.”

“He wanted to go off and do another show anyway, and I’m waiting for his new show to appear. I think we all are,” he added.

Earlier this year Edd announced he was leaving Wheeler Dealers after 13 seasons on the show. Despite the move, the show was renewed for season 14, with former “For The Love of Cars” host Ant Anstead taking over spanner-spinning duties.

Brewer praised Anstead’s superior work ethic in the video, while also suggesting that Edd’s problem was that he let his newfound fame go to his head. “It’s much more back to where it used to be because Ant is a real mechanic,” Brewer said. “Edd became a TV star, rather than… Edd forgot his focus really on what he was there to do. He was a mechanic, and then he became a TV star.”

“When you become a TV star, and he turns up everyday and I’m saying to him ‘We need to rip the engine out of that Corvette’ and he’s going ‘I don’t need to do that, I’m a TV star!’” – Mike Brewer

Brewer said that while Edd would moan and argue, eventually he’d get to work and the job would be done – but the issue was how long the process would take to get there.

According to Edd, his decision to leave Wheeler Dealers was due to the production company’s decision to ‘dumb down’ the very thing which made the show successful in the first place – in-depth coverage of the fixes performed on the cars in the workshop. Not only are these pieces rather difficult to film, but they’re also time-intensive and as a result more expensive.

This revelation angered fans, resulting in Brewer being on the receiving end of their venom – which even came in the form of death threats to him and other members of his family.

Brewer publicly countered China’s claims that Discovery planned to reduce the workshop aspect of the show in the upcoming season. “There’s no way on earth that anyone has ever suggested that the mechanical content of the show is going to be reduced,” Brewer said.

“Where that came from, I don’t know. It is not going to be reduced, Discovery channel are not going to change the format one iota.”

I miss Edd China WD is not the same with him not in it.
You used to be able to have a break down in £ how does $ help use also what about man hours (27) most of the time they get sold at a loss. When work is being done you don’t get things explained as much as you used to do.. Ant the new guy sounds very condescending and Mike really just prats about like a big kid who gets loads of money for not much work.

You get the feeling Edd was getting fed up being subservient to Mike Brewer when it should be a two hander. Let’s face it, the show is not serious about restoring cars for money since most involve weeks of work and resprays just for £500 profit. I’m sure Ant’s a nice bloke but the pumped up muscles suggest he likes himself a little too much. Mike Brewer switches on the larger than life persona for the cameras but not everyone warms to that persona. You do feel that Edd does the majority of the work. I watch the new US version but I prefer the Edd China ones.

Omg there are some right idiots on these comments, it’s almost like they don’t know it’s a TV show production. ‘Mike was just buying crap cars for Edd to fix’….. Errrrrr that’s the whole point of the show, ‘we do proper restorations not like they do on the show’….. Wow you are just so amazing, I wish I could be like you ya wanker, , ‘ant said we have to put the plugs in the right order, that’s so basic’…. You do understand the show is trying to cater for everybody not just you ya cock, ‘mike sells the car for less than advertised’…. That’s the point of being a salesman, you sell cars ya Muppet.
I agree that Mike can talk some pish but that’s all part of the show, I liked Edd’s way of explaining things and think Ant does a similarly good job but he can come across as a bit of a dick some times.
The show was right to move to the US because we don’t have enough different types of cars for them to fix.

Mike Brewer is like a peurile little child stamping his feet, he believes too much in his own importance and seems to be quite pretentious, he had the cheek to call Ed China a Judas or a Traitor I can’t remember the exact words, while I cannot stand that loud mouthed yob Jeremy Clarkson who because he has a few Bob in the bank thinks he can get away with anything, when he was given the push from Top Gear at least they all stuck together and left together, so who is the Judas Brewer or China my money is on Brewer he thinks more of keeping his fat little face on telly than of a long standing supposed friendship with Ed China, Ed was the only reason I used to watch WD in the past. Even if I watched the TV now I would not be watching the new WD. Brewer just makes my blood boil with his childish humour that isn’t funny anyway I only hope the new guy realises soon at what a DICK Brewer is and leaves the show unless he believes Brewers line of B S.

Agree 100%, Mike is a total gob shite! Talks himself up while all the work is done by Ed; note theres never any labour costs so did Ed work for free to inflate the profits? Final point on the ingenious Mike, I can see why he’s over weight, sitting behind that laptop and driving around collecting stuff must be exhausting for him!

Another Aussie viewer here & I have to say , Mike Brewer is a dickhead ! Come to Australia and try slapping/ forcefully grabbing someone’s hand like he does , and the result will be a trip in an ambulance for him ! ! Leaning all over a freshly painted car – BAD ! Never does any work on a vehicle yet claims all the glory when selling – what a douchebag ! ! Ed China should have his own show as he is the man with the know-how , glad he left the black-haired turtle so he can get on with his career !

Hope it was untreated pine.

Come back Ed, PLEASE !

Mike is just a typical car salesman and if shit was worth gold he would be a millionaire and the amusing thing is on every show is how he takes a large portion of the credit for all the work Ed China has done in fact its laughable and Mike really is just another Arthur Daley lolllllll

Mike Brewaris a fat jumped up little prick, Edd China WAS A STAR, IS A STAR, he’s a bloody genius, brewer is just a flapping gob, his input to the show was less than worthless, needless to say i no longer watch it and nevef will again., It was blatantly obvious that Brewar wanted all the limelight or doing next to nothing except Come out with pathetic remarks, people that watch programs like that are only interested in one thing, to watch and listen to very knowledgeable mechanic going about his job, in fact that little wanker Brewar was totally surplus to requirements. Now it’s time to sack that excuse of an producer.

Worth remembering that WD was created by Mike in the beginning. I found it odd in the last series or two with Edd of how much time he wasn’t there. Whether that was because he wasn’t around as much so MB had to do more of the ‘mechnical’ stuff and was an indication of problems behind the scenes we may never know. Either way, I like it with Edd in it, and like it still with AA in it. I do wish it was still in the UK, but sometimes thing have to change in order for something to keep going.

Reply
chippie May 4, 2020 at 12:36 am

Well actually he did not, the show was created by Daniel Allum and Michael Wood from Attaboy TV. MIke along with Edd were just the front men, they both started at the same time.

Also, it is a TV Show, I very much doubt that the whole film and production crew all turned up, set up and started to film just to show Edd was not there. I would put money on the fact that Mike finally realized that the show was NOT about himself. As he is now involved in the production, he made the changes to try and change people’s perception, as in, hey, look, I can work on cars as well…. Sorry but this is extremely obvious to me.I would also not be surprised if it was all Mikes doing to remove Edd as people only really watched it for Edd, what he did and not to see Mike. I could be totally wrong of course but an honest decent man does now go knocking old colleagues on air irrespective if true or not. Totally unprofessional and I think clearly shows his true colours!

Think the clues are in the video clip… Mike says, ‘I TOLD HIM DO THIS DO THAT’, not being funny but who is meant to be engineer/mechanic there? Brewer is a dealer/trader and not a qualified engineer so if I was Edd I would have gotten pretty p*ssed with him telling me what to do all the time.

May have missed something but not seen a single clip or comment where Edd is knocking Mike in any way (not to say there are not any). All Edd has ever said is that the Production Company that took the show over planned to change direction with all the mechanical scenes slightly, this is actually true and documented by themselves yet Mike goes and slates Edd! Why, well the only reason I can think of is that despite him going Mike was still not the center of the show. There is so much support out there for Edd yet zero for Mike and let’s face it, at the end of the day it is the viewers opinion that counts. The show goes on and is still good but it is still not about Mike despite there being far less screen time on the car these days and more on Mike, seeming as he is involved in production I think that speaks volumes. Still, screen time will only grow resentment to the show as most people simply do not like him sadly..

Also, this is pretty old news so guess all the isolation we are in and the re-runs have excited people again lol.

At the end we see the car and Edd simply says, “Parts cost £Y, Z hours of work, we managed to sell it for £A.” Let us do the maths.

Mike Brewer is a typical pommie car salesman. Full of shit and loud mouth. We restored my 1956 Chevy here in New Zealand with a complete body off restoration with all brand new floors, parts and everything brand new in 8 weeks. Everything in the car is power. Seats, disc brakes all around, steering new 350 (425hp) engine, new 4 speed auto, new posi rear end, cruise control, new whitewalls, fender skirts, great dual header exhaust, and great sound system. Beautiful Red paint and new grey upholstery with power bucket seats. Needless to say it was expensive but is valued at $175,000NZ. Now this is what you can call a restored car. Not some rinky dink repair job they do on Wheeler Dealers and call it restored. Its all bullshit and only made for TV and after all who would buy a car from Mike Brewer in the first place. I do miss Ed and his knowledge but life goes on.Thanks and have a nice day. jim crain sr.

Has it not occured to anyone writing on this post that Wheeler Dealers is an entertainment programme. They don’t actually make their living fro buying, repairing and selling cars. And as such the relative merits of Ed China and his replacement Ant is more a matter of who is the better showman. Not who is the better mechanic. Given the choice, I prefer Ant. As he is the better “actor” .

Just like Car SOS, it got taken over by stage managed bullshit and bollocks presenters. Brewer at WD and the even more irritating Tim Shaw on Car SOS. Then of course saw Edd’s (classy) explanation of why he left the show, and then saw this. Mike Brewer being Mike Brewer I guess (a pikie who tarmacs driveways atthe weekend). The show was all about Edd fixing cars, with Brewer ballooning in at the beginnimg and end, where he sold the car for £20 more than he bought it for. Talentless twat.

So take out ungratious Mike Brewer and you have the perfect show. Nice one 👍

No ever seems to mention how unrealistic the programme is. By not putting a value on the labour time of each job the show is meaningless. In the UK garage labour costs vary from £80 AN HOUR right up to £100. Adding in these costs makes every single project on all 14 series a pointless loss. I love the programme but think the profit from each car re-build should be significantly greater. To give greater reality. In the real world Edd (or Ant) would not put that kind of work into a vehicle for such pitiful returns.

John February 20, 2019 at 6:12 am

You’re right, It costs a bloody fortune to restore an old car – most of them are just not worth the effort, Who would spend hundreds of hours plus the finance to say, restore a mark 3 Escort? , you would only do this to keep it for yourself and for the love of it, theres no profit in it.

I restored 1972 Cortina 2000 GT, it took me £24000 to do it over 10 Years. Its as new.

Its insurance value is £10500

This has always been my favorite auto show and I kept most of the edd/mike episodes. Edd was the attraction and brought a shade tree mechanic mentality that I could relate to. It’s unfortunate that the show ended because of edd’s departure and with due respects to Ant, the show is far from what attracted me to it. Seems that Ant brings some expertise to the show, but by and large the producers are satisfied with jobbing out most mechanical issues whereas Edd would actually work on the issues and use ingenuity to complete the task. I watched some of the new shows but remain of the fence as to whether the show is worth my while.

I endured Mike Brewer picking up the cars to get to the real heart of the show. Edd WAS WDs. Slagging him off proving he was the ‘Big ‘ed not a big Edd. Pathetic really. I met the fat man at the Citroen ninety year do at the Ace Cafe where he asked me about my car but he cut me off in mid sentence when he spotted Fiona Bruce in the crowd and just walked off. Rude man. .Alexei Sale who was at the same show was genuinely interested and even sat in my ex Midge Ure car. :]

The new format is terrible, more repeating stuff than ever. Ant is ok and his fabrication skills are up to par, but the show is missing and the nitty gritty details and Edd’s charm. Half the show is now about fabricating some custom part (boring when it’s 50% of EACH episode), whilst 90% of the car-restoration isn’t even mentioned. They just skip from that one part to the fully restored end-result; do we think we’re stupid or something; this isn’t supposed to be Overhauled 2.0 guys !

Well having just watched episode 6 of the latest series not only has the workshop aspect of the show been dumbed down the whole show has been dumbed down for the USA market. Lots of repeated film clips to remind us of what’s happening, No real engineering insight or detail anymore just an old car goes in and a refurbished one comes out. Nothing to see here, sadly.

Reply
Sean McKellar February 22, 2018 at 8:48 am

I’ve noticed many American shows seem to follow this format – as if they’re catering for people who have started watching part way through. Hopefully with the rise of on-demand viewing this will be something that’ll go away soon.

Reply
Eddie April 23, 2020 at 3:51 am

Disagree. There’s motorheads all over the planet and watched because of the projects and explanatory “fixes” of all makes and models. Definitely not dumbed down for ANY market, especially USA.
I don’t know their demographics, but all my friends watched because of my opening sentence.

Sad to see Edd go but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I agree with a previous comment that Edd’s explanation was gracious and to the point. He did not feel the need to throw Mike under the bus. Bad move regardless of how Mike saw it.

Hope Edd finds a good project to take on, Mike your a dope

There is always enough blame to go around, both guys were important, I really don’t think Edd is the salesman type. I would say if they switched roles the show would not have worked, Mike is the salesman, and Edd is the mechanic, sure Mike can work on cars but Edd is way better, I don’t think Edd could sell water in the desert. Teamwork is what made the show work, no mystery or anything more.It sure did appear to me that Edd got a big head and thought he was always the smartest guy in the room, no matter where he was. Sadly I dont think the show will last, and I think we would have the same results if it was Mike that left and not Edd.

Frank Reilly January 9, 2018 at 11:43 am

Regardless of who or what is to blame for the situation Mike Brewer’s public criticism of Edd China was totally unnecessary and extremely unprofessional.
It reeked of childish spite for a perceived personal offence. Watch Edd China’s video explanation Mr Brewer. That is how you conduct yourself when in the public eye.
I suspect you may have found yourself reacting to the fan’s general opinion that Edd was in fact the show. If you think otherwise you clearly misunderstand your audience and the very reason they watch the show and have in addition completely overestimated your contribution to the programme.
To summarise Edd is not to blame for the fans disliking your personality or your delivery and your subsequent behaviour only lends credence to their claims.

Could not agree more with Loren J. The ONLY reason for watching WD is Mr China`s “how too” (in a calm & easy to understand fashion). First some production twitt (what) killed TopGear and now Velocishit kills WD. Both ended up in some overproduced american world. Why can`t we let great English shows be and let America produce it`s own shows (crap)?
Without Edd teaching me stuff I might as well watch endless re-runs of Two & a half Men or Kardasiass.

I liked wheeler dealers & enjoyed the fact that ed & Mike each did their bit. However it seems egos have become over enlarged with time. Just like so many pop & Rock groups have fallen apart previously. Shame really, they should both forget the blame game & concentrate on their own future projects. Good luck to both of them.

Just can’t take to Anstead … there’s something very unconvincing and false about him….unlike Edd who always seemed like a really genuine guy……it’s clear to me that Brewer was the main issue… series 13 was virtually unwatchable because of his bravado and bullshine..the whole .’Mikes Tools’ nonsense and bigging himself up because he managed to take some wheel nuts off….little wonder Edd was sick to death of him. The new series are a pale imitation of what the show used to be – forced laughs and painful script – lead by a motormouthed blag merchant and performed by a phony pretty boy mechanic …..nah, not for me thanks…..I’ll wait to see what the Chin man’s next move is

That is a ridiculous idea, without gloves, your hands become uncleanable, s owhat if you like to cook, feed the baby, play guitar, your hands though wadshed six times still with black grease that won;t come out, lodged under fingernails, no, it is professional to wear gloves.
It always looked like chubs had the easy part, whizzing off for a drive, picking up some parts, then bla bla bla while Edd did all the real work and did it very carefully. I also like fixing things, and it’s enjoyable to see someone who knows how to tackle a job and make it clear how it ought to be done. And on to pof that Edd is a bright guy.
