Jeremy Clarkson silent on Chris Evans’s Top Gear debut

Jeremy Clarkson has maintained Twitter silence since the first episode of the new-look Top Gear was broadcast on Sunday. His verdict – and that of his two hosting sidekicks, James May and Richard Hammond – has been hotly anticipated after the series opener drew 4.3m viewers, a million fewer than the last show of the previous series.

But while critics and tweeters have slammed Evans and his new co-presenter, Matt LeBlanc, the only reference made by the trio on Twitter came shortly before it was broadcast. “I’m really looking forward to watching Top Gear without knowing what happens in the end. #NoSpoilerAlert,” wrote May. He has since told reporters that he watched the show and is a “massive fan”, but refused to be drawn further on the matter and declined to comment on the low ratings and hostile reviews.

Clarkson, meanwhile, remained tight-lipped when confronted by Daily Mail reporters at his London home. He was unable to give his own critique of the episode because he was “busy working on my new show”, he said adding: “I will talk to you another time.”

However, his daughter, Emily, delivered her own verdict. “Nope. Not even a little bit convinced,” she tweeted.

Clarkson was returning home from Monaco on Sunday and so may have missed the show – and Evans’s dig at him. Referring to the row that led to the former presenter being sacked by the BBC, the new host joked: “By the way, we don’t talk about catering on this show any more.”
