Toyota on track for record sales year

Toyota Australia’s reputation for manufacturing boring cars hasn’t stopped them being on-track to potentially post a record sales year for 2015. Australians bought an unprecedented 125,850 new motor vehicles in the last month of the financial year – 7,092 cars (six per cent) above the previous June record achieved back in 2013.

Official VFACTS figures show Toyota supplied 21,501 of these vehicles (or just over 17%) which consisted of cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles. This is on top of an already strong first half of the year, which saw Toyota shift 101,714 new cars so far in 2015, out of 578,427 total.

“Annualised it is now possible for the 2015 sales year to be the best ever – some 20,000 vehicles ahead of the 2013 record,” Tony Cramb, executive director sales and marketing Toyota Australia said. The all-time annual record stands at 1,136,227.

“June demand is traditionally high as a result of end of financial year requirement, especially in the business sector. This year has been exceptional. All indicators are for strong demand to continue at levels equalling or even exceeding previous second halves. For the time being Toyota stands by its forecast but it is now clear there is potential for customer demand to exceed expectation.” Mr Cramb said.

The 2014/15 financial year ended with a total 1,131,701 deliveries from July 2014 to June 2015, the second highest on record, of which Toyota made up 204,110.

Toyota’s Corolla was Australia’s top selling car for the financial year, with 43,319 deliveries ahead of Mazda 3 on 41,216.

Toyota’s HiLux light commercial vehicle was the third most in-demand vehicle across all categories with 37,747 sales in the financial year.

Corolla claimed monthly leadership six times and HiLux once throughout the financial year.

Toyota claimed leadership in eight VFACTS categories in June, the most of any vehicle maker, and led all three major segments – passenger vehicle, SUV and light commercial.
