The 2016 Mercedes-AMG E43 gets twin-turbo muscle

We might have to wait a bit longer before we’ll see Mercedes-AMG’s new fire-breathing E63, but for now the company has unveiled their new E43 sedan – and it’s packing a twin-turbo power-plant.

The new E63 is powered by a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 engine, which is good for 295kW (396hp) of power and 521Nm (384lb-ft) of torque. It’s actually the same engine Mercedes-AMG used in their C43 Coupe, although the one in the two-door develops 18kW (24hp) less. The twin-turbo 6 is paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission, which Mercedes say will allow the E43 to hit 100km/h (60mph) in 4.5 seconds. It’ll also come with a quad exhaust, which we hope will give the car plenty of bark. Like the C43, the E43 will be all-wheel drive only, but at least it’s rear-biased: Mercedes says that 69 percent of the engine’s torque is directed to the rear wheels, which should hopefully keep things fun.

As expected, the E43 gets its fair share of “sports” options sprinkled throughout. There’s a sportier look, a sports suspension, sports steering, sportier wheels, and of course AMG sports seats. All together, it sounds like the it will make for a great every-day sports sedan.

Look for the Mercedes-AMG E43 at the New York Auto Show later this month.
