New Audi TT RS retains 395hp 5-cylinder engine

Just days after Porsche revealed details of their 718 Cayman ditching the 6-cylinder engine for a 4-cylinder turbocharged unit, Audi has responded by unveiling their new TT RS – a car which not only retained its signature 5-cylinder turbocharged engine, but also gets a brand new and redesigned version of it. And more power.

The headline for the new TT RS is the amount of power on offer – precisely 295kW (395hp) – produced by the newer and lighter engine. Audi shaved 26kg from the engine by switching to a vermicular cast-iron crankcase, while a new intake system and pistons mean the engine’s redline has been pushed out to 7000rpm – 500rpm higher than the previous model. Despite the pressure for manufacturers to downsize their engines, Audi product planner Annette Möllhof says the TT RS’ 5-cylinder engine has a bright future, and that the Quattro division are ‘actively looking’ for other applications for it. It’ll most likely end up in the RS3, plus any future RS versions of the Q2 and Q4 SUVs.
