Ford USA is planning to pump up their Fusion and give it the power to match its looks, with the new 2017 Fusion Sport. The Fusion Sport will send 242kW (325hp) and 475Nm (350lb-ft) of torque to the ground via an all-wheel drive system. Interested? We are.
Ford decided against naming it the Fusion ST or Fusion RS, presumably because it isn’t hasn’t quite reached either of those levels, and it will be joined by a new Platinum model, which brings more safety features and technology, and fortified hybrid models.
“The Fusion nameplate is only 10 years old, but it’s done a lot for Ford Motor Company,” said Wade Jackson, Fusion marketing manager. “We’re continuing to challenge the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.”
So, 242kW (325hp) and 475Nm (350lb-ft) of torque. Some decent figures for a family sedan, and all thanks to the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 sitting under the bonnet. It will not only outgun the V6 Camry and Accord models, but also the BMW 340i. The engine will be mated to a specially tuned six-speed automatic transmission and the Fusion Sport model will also have continuously controlled damping suspension, a blacked-out mesh grille, 19-inch wheels, a rear spoiler and dual-twin exhaust ports.
The 2017 Fusion also gets a Platinum model, which slots over the Titanium trim. Platinum adds cocoa and Venetian leathers to the cabin, 19-inch wheels and a unique grille. Meanwhile, the Fusion Hybrid and plug-in hybrid (Energi) receive software updates that Ford believes will deliver more efficiency, though executives wouldn’t say if the fuel economy figures will change. The Fusion line also gets Sync 3, an improved cruise control system, pedestrian detection, and an enhanced parking feature that allows for perpendicular manoeuvres.
The Fusion is Ford’s best-selling car, and it moved 300,170 units in 2015, down 2.2 percent from 2014.
