Are Kogan TVs any good? Here’s how it all went wrong for me.

Recently I found myself in the market for a new TV. After moving to a new house, my old 42″ LG LCD panel was looking smaller than ever – or perhaps my eyes simply aren’t as good as they used to be? Whatever. I felt like there was a hole in my life and the only thing that could fill it would be a brand new flatscreen – something in the order of 55-inches or bigger.

Like other people who have found themselves in this situation, I first jumped online and trawled the websites of all the local retailers. I knew exactly what I wanted – a 55″ LED LCD panel which could display 4K at 60Hz, plus a minimum of 4 HDMI inputs and DVR capabilities via a memory stick made up my short list. After seeing a mate’s Smart TV in action, I decided to forgo those capabilities and instead rely on my existing PlayStation 4 and Google Chromecast to satisfy my video streaming needs. A quick price check on models meeting my needs suggested that I’d be up for a minimum of AU$1,200, moving up on a sliding scale beyond AU$2,000. And then the Aussie online retailer Kogan.com got my attention.

Kogan were offering their self-branded 55-inch TVs (KALED55UHDYA) built using a 4K Samsung LED panel for just $789. After reading a few favourable reviews, I took the plunge and placed my order online. But was the deal too good to be true? Well, I found out just 5 days later when it arrived on my doorstep on October 2nd.

kogan-tv-1

First impressions were good. The TV was packed well and looked fantastic – with a nice slimline black bezel surrounding the huge 55-inch screen. After hanging it on my wall-mount, I marvelled at how perfectly sized it was for the room and the distance at which I was sitting… but something was wrong. By default, the screen looked overly bright – the colours were washed out and blacks were far from black. Luckily, I was able to rectify these issues after I played with the image brightness, contrast and gamma settings for 5 – 10 minutes. But unfortunately, it wouldn’t last…

Kogan, we have a problem…

Unfortunately for me, when I powered on my brand new TV the very next day I was greeted once again by a very washed out looking display. After flipping through the display settings, I noticed that the adjustments I had entered the previous day had all been forgotten, and the TV had returned to the default. Thinking nothing of it, I quickly adjusted the display back to where I liked it and continued enjoying my brand new TV… until the next time I turned it on. Yup, it forgot my settings… again.

At this point, I began to regret the decision I made of buying something as large as a TV online. If I’d of purchased it from a local retailer, I could have returned it to the store and either exchanged it for a new one or obtained a refund – but with Kogan you’re sort of screwed in this regard.

I called Kogan’s support number and spoke to one of their service representatives, who claimed they would send me new firmware which would fix the issue. Great! I felt so relieved as I downloaded the file and copied it onto a USB so I could load it onto the TV. A few restarts later and I confirmed that the new firmware had indeed fixed the problem – an awesome result. But unfortunately for me, Kogan’s new firmware may have fixed my existing problem, but at the expense of creating a brand new one.

While my TV was now remembering the custom display settings I had entered, the Backlight brightness setting was now working incorrectly. The Backlight setting is a sliding scale from 1 – 10 which affects how bright the screen illuminates, with 8 being the default I left it at. But while the Backlight may have been set to 8, every time I turned the TV on the screen was incredibly dull – the equivalent to having the Backlight set to 1.

Kogan’s support team had no way to resolve the issue and suggested that I return the TV to them for inspection. At that point, the question going through my mind was “Can I live with this problem for the rest of this TV’s lifespan (5 years?) or do I send it back to Kogan for repair, which at the very least would take a few weeks?”

After mulling over it for a week, I had to choose the latter.

And so the long wait began

The danger of buying from an online retailer like Kogan is that generally, the cost to return a faulty item is the buyer’s responsibility. Luckily for me, Kogan organised a courier to collect the TV on October 18th at no cost – which was a bonus I guess. It would have cost a bomb to freight something that large from Brisbane to Melbourne.

Kogan received the TV on October 24th and suggested that they’d need up to 14 working days to rectify the problem. Once you take weekends out of the equation, it meant I was going to be without a TV for almost 3 weeks – and that doesn’t include the 4 or 5 days required to freight it back to my house when they’re done with it. So make that a month.

To make matters worse, Kogan’s 14 working day claim meant they should have fixed my TV by November 10th… which is today. But surprise surprise, I contacted them and the response was “the new firmware isn’t ready yet“, and that maybe next week it will be.

New firmware, different problem

Perhaps I was naive at this point to think that Kogan’s new firmware would fix the issues I experienced with my new TV, and that I’d once again fall in love and be singing the praises of this sleek 55″ 4K beast. But sadly, this wasn’t the case.

Kogan’s new firmware (which arrived a week or two after they promised it) did indeed fix the brightness problem, but it introduced a brand new and perhaps even more annoying problem – a weird volume spike everytime you turned the TV on.

Let me put it like this. Imagine the typical volume you like to watch your TV at and let’s say that is “10” on the volume scale. Now imagine how you’d feel if your TV volume spiked to say “30” for a fraction of a second before returning back to the level you set it at, everytime you turned it on. Yeah, that’s what mine does now. Every. single time. You could set the TV volume to 1 or even mute it, and you’ll still hear the same volume spike. It’s pathetic.

It’s almost as if Kogan were trying their hardest to cause maximum offence, because once you couple this sound with their pure white splash screen which appears on startup – you’ve got a pretty damn annoying TV on your hands. By this point I’d had enough of dealing with Kogan’s support team and simply lived with the issue. It’s still happening years later, and I never heard from Kogan ever again.

This whole experience really boggles my mind, and to me, there is only one way I can summarise this situation, and that is:

Kogan’s returns policy ensures you’re treated like a second rate citizen

I mean in what other retail environment would this sort of outcome be acceptable? Imagine buying a brand new iPhone 7 from Apple’s online store, only to discover you received a faulty handset when it arrived on your doorstep a few days later. So long as you returned it to Apple within 14 days, they’d immediately offer you a brand new replacement phone or even a full refund should you be that dissatisfied with your experience. But with Kogan, there’s no such luck. They’ve already got your money, and you’re left waiting like a fool for weeks on end while they attempt to repair the bloody thing. No brand new replacement. No easy fix to make the customer happy.

kogan

So, would I recommend Kogan.com?

After reading the above, what do you think? Absolutely not.

While there are significant savings to be had on items such as flatscreen TVs, my overall experience thus far means that in hindsight I would have much rather paid a little bit extra and purchased a new TV from one of the many retailers in my local area.

The risks with purchasing their TV’s are simply too great – and if you decide to go ahead and do the same, well, you’re just rolling the dice.

27 Sept 2023 our new 55″ Google TV arrived from Kogan. Speedy delivery. Great service. Setting up will require a different wall mount. No biggie- the old TV was a Sony Brava and the software issues with it almost caused a divorce so I’m happy to drag out the big mutha hammer drill to fit another to the concrete block wall. On set up on it’s legs awaiting a wall mount, I see that the picture quality is less than the Sony but there’s a huge price difference. I’ve adjusted the picture settings and improved it a tad. The TV speaker setup is good but my sound bar does not like Netflix so I’m working through that. It sounds like a dirt bike in the lounge on Netflix. The setup was quite easy (I’m 76 and used my Apple phone to do that). Early days but so far so good. Oddly if I leave the soundbar off until after Netflix is on I have no problem. I have a new optical cable coming tomorrow so I’ll see if that fixes the prob. Otherwise I’ll look at another soundbar. It’s a Netflix problem I think so this is not a TV fault.

Excellent. Peope are finally talking about kogan’s pathetic products and service.
This situation doesn’t just apply to their TV’s it applies to their whole product line – if something goes wrong, you’re stuffed.
I have been through this process, but my outcome was they would not refund or fix anything at all.

Avoid kogan at all costs.

This article is not dated. Going by the model numbers of tech mentioned, we can assume it was made written in 2016. This was 7 years ago. I would consider this article to be irrelevant for todays judgement on any company or line of products.

55″ Kogan android tv. One year warranty. Last night picture colours turned to only red and green. Went into PICTURE mode to change setting from user to standard. Now no picture. No backlight. Totally black screen. Cant get into tv settings. Can get sound. Tried all fixes. How can you reset anything if there is only black screen? Rubbish. Ten days out of warranty. Going to Good Guys today to buy another “really good” Hisense.
KOGAN? ABSOLUTE RUBBISH!

You should contact kogan anyway, mine was like 10 months past warranty and i wrote them a email was very polite about it explained issue along with a video and they are offering to repair or replace, I’m taking it to the nearest repair centre for them is inspect and we’ll see what happens, i would expect to get at least 5 years issue free from a new tv.

Im glad this is getting some recognition, after my Koran purchase a few years ago of another faulty product, it was an absolute nightmare to try and get any support at all after only a month after purchase.

I vow never again to support any Kogan purchase or Koran product.

Rolling the dice indeed.

Upgrading to a new 65″TV in a couple of months and definitely will be avoiding Kogan after this article and comments. You get what you pay for but it should be at the bare minimum working to purpose.

When I purchased my TV in 2019, I was tossing up whether to buy a Kogan one for $700 or a Sony one for $1000 from Harvey Norman (both were 55″). I went with the latter. Now the TV has a huge green spot in the middle and needs to be replaced and Harvey Norman won’t do anything about it since it is out of warranty. In hindsight, I wish I had’ve gone with the Kogan TV instead. Now there is nothing I can do other than just buy another TV, which will probably end up being a Kogan one, since I know a few people who have had them and they all recommend them. However, as the article points out, there is a risk with purchasing one online that needs to be taken into consideration, but after my current experience, that is a risk I am prepared to take.

Simply not true. If you purchased this in Australia, Harvey Norman cannot refuse to do something just because it’s outside the stated “Warranty Period”. Under Australian consumer laws you still have rights post that advertised Warranty Period and the reasonable expected life of the item in question in respect of the price paid. My expectation is that any modern TV should last at least 5, and in most cases more like 8 years. You just need to fight them. Of course they want you to buy a new TV but you don’t have to. I know this because I’ve fought this out several times now. Don’t give up.

I bought the following Dick Smith TV’s second hand recently;
* Dick Smith 32in LCD TV (model GE6606) – $ 15 = Gumtree
* Dick Smith 21.5in Full HD LED TV (model GE6826) – $ 8 = Op Shop
What I notice they both have in common is ~
> constant ‘ no signal error ‘
> the cheapest/worst remotes
> terrible interfaces
Well I couldn’t complain about the price, but what I paid I consider the right price.
Anyone outlaying a wad of cash for this crap from Korgan or rebranded Dick Smith I feel sorry for.
Resale value would have to be terrible, you’d be doing the TV a favour by sending it to the tip & putting it out of it’s misery.
PS.
– I did buy a 2nd hand Kogan Agora smartphone from Cashies years ago, & that was just terrible.
– And a lady from work years ago ordered a Samsung smartphone from Korgan, it was faulty on arrival.

Ted, Kogan bought the rights to Dick Smith’s online store and customer base only.
They sell the same Kogan products under the DS brand – they are identical.

The Dick Smith legacy TVs you purchased GE6606 & GE6826 were designed and manufactured over a decade ago by cheap Chinese manufacturers that gave personal incentives to buyers from DS which hamstrung the business with awful products that didn’t advance for years while other tech was advancing quickly. These TVs were early digital receiver versions (weak) when most people still hadn’t transitioned from set top boxes.
Absolutely awful by modern standards and well below par by 2010 standards.

I don’t believe at any point in history Kogan’s software has mirrored the legacy DS software, but it’s similarly terrible!

They also parallel import their Samsung mobile phones and flash them with AU software – terrible!

The only thing I would ever buy from Kogan is their 32″ TVs for bedrooms or guest rooms in an air bnb!

I understand and appreciate your desire to help other consumers, with your post. However, you are factually incorrect on a few points with regards to our rights, as consumers and the obligations and responsibilities of the manufacturers/retailers. e.g. For something as large as a wide screen TV, the manufacturer or retailer is responsible for the costs of picking up the faulty device, if it has a major failure. This includes providing packaging, more often than not, in the form of the box that will no doubt be shipped with a replacement unit.

how do you get the retailer to follow the law. call the police? lol.
your answer is an academic one not based in the real world at all.
the person with the cash has the power to do what they want, you may even find the product was purchased in a foreign country (where the server is based) so weather Aus law applies is uncertain.

If you buy from a store you can sit outside it with a sign until you get redress, You can not pressure an online retailer in any way without spending cash on anti promotion

You enforce your rights in the first 6 months by paying by credit card . The credit card provider will refund d your purchase price if you have a right to it, and if the T v is not fit for purpose you have a right to a refund.
BTW sellers from overseas are subject to the law of the country they sell to.

Thank you all good people who warned me on this website. I guess I was lucky in ordering my small TV’s from Kogan. One 23 inch failed and was replaced and one failed room air conditioner was refunded, no hassle. My current 43 inch, is good so far, touch wood. As I have dealt with Kogan for some years, I was tempted to place a bet on a 65 inch TV (yeah it’s like that) but you guys curbed my gamble. I hated dealing with Dick Shith for years when he was selling electronic parts at inflated prices. I can understand Kogan buying Shith customer contacts but Kogan should know he bought the smell as well. If I were you Kogan I would quietly ghost that DS brand name.

EXPERIENCED WARNING !!!
(1). I had no trouble with Kogan returns BUT keep your packaging complete until you have tested the product for some months, to make it easy to re-package and send back.

(2). Kogan pricing can be sneaky. Dont believe the up/down price reductions. Watch your Kogan emails daily for things you’re interested in to determine whether its a true reduction. Prices must be being flipped by a computer. A reduced price yesterday can be re-advertised today as a bargain even if it’s now hundreds of dollars dearer -you cant embarrass a computer. Do casual looks at Kogan emails to soon determine if it really is a bottom price. He’s never sold out anyway- there is always a better product that gets listed.

(3). Our serious small hard working appliances such as our Microwave (LG), Blender, Vitamizer, Cake mixer, Egg beater(Sunbeam), Meat Mincer (Kenwood), 2 remote control fans(Sunbeam, DeLonghi) were all priced at Harvey Norman and bought cheaper from the Good Guys. And probably cheaper than Kogan when he’s selling brand names. Plus no problem with returns.

i very rarely have bad support experiences and while i dont doubt that people here have had issues with Kogan, theres something to say for the people that havent too, i bought a 43 inch LED TV around a year ago and ive had no issues whatsoever, anytime ive had a query about a product the help team is very responsive, anytime you buy anything online you have to know theres a chance of risk, also i dont understand people saying colours are washed out, im sure they are not the same as a $5000 tv but really there are like 4-5 companies that produce panels for ALL THE TV BRANDS YOU KNOW, do you really think Kogan doesnt use the same ones? sure they have cheaper manufacturers but they also use Sharp, who produces screens for LG and SAMSUNG, whether they are exactly same can be debated, but i just dont buy half the people who make their problems way bigger online than they actually are lol, if you know how to deal with issues with products online you can get a result that works for you, but if not you go and complain online about the company being shit, noone really cares

Not sure I agree with the recommendation to avoid Kogan completely, although I do agree with being cautious, but that goes without saying when buying expensive electronics online.

I purchase a 55″ TV from Kogan just under 2 years ago and recently have had a weird error popping up on the screen. I logged a support case and was provided updated firmware which did not fix the issue. At that point, Kogan organised a courier to pick the TV up, they did spend their 14 days diagnosing it, but have provided me a full refund – 2 years after buying the TV – and without any hassle. It really hasn’t been a bad experience support experience at all…

I have been shopping with Kogan since 2014 and purchased 16 items in total. On the 1st of Jan 2015 I purchased a Komodo 42ltr fridge /freezer has been working fine since. One of the latches broke and after a couple of emails and calls to customer service I received parts to fix the problem at no charge,
On the 8th Oct 2018 I bought a 40″ Smart TV, no problems setting up and has been fine and with chromecast we have been streaming Foxtel and other apps. Very pleased with this item.
On the28 Dec 2018 I purchased a Stick Vac and after using a few times one of the catches that retains the tube to the Vac kept popping out. After talking to customer support and sending photo of problem I promptly received a complete replacement unit.
On 13 Dec 2019 I purchased a Certa 36v Hedgetrimmer kit and that has been working fine for amost a year now.
Overall very pleased with Kogan and their response to any problems I had.

I’ve got 2 Kogan TVs and they are both great. I had an issue with one of them nearly 2 years in so they picked it up and sent me a new one. Turned out the problem wasn’t even the tv, it was the streaming device I was using with it. Kogan is brilliant. The replacement tv they sent me is now 2 years old and hasn’t missed a beat either.

I had exactly the same problem as Stephan, 50 inch 4k Kogan, the unit cost $389 plus freight, the backlight went after 18 Months, I wouldn’t think they would be obliged to cover a budget item such as that out of warranty. An expensive TV would probably be a different story.
I repaired it myself a year ago and has been going fine ever since.

The issue with the attitude of “it’ll be covered under warranty” is that there will be a period where the customer us without TV. Sometimes even a huge easy to negotiate warranty doesn’t fix the fact that brands can be inferior. I’d rather buy an expensive reliable brand over a cheap brand with 5 year warranty….imagine a yearly repair where your TV is gone for weeks at a time!

For anyone interested, my Kogan TV still exhibits the “volume spike” problem on startup some 4 ~ 5 years later. All of the writing on the remote control buttons wore away after the first three years, meaning we now have a perfectly black remote control which either has to be operated by guess work or from your own memory of where the buttons are located.

Everyone in my household still hates it. The volume spike, to the retina-burning white ‘Kogan’ startup screen, the crap picture quality and muffled sound. We still use it because we want to keep it out of landfill for as long as possible. But that’s pretty much the only reason.

Honestly, I really like my TV. I paid around $500, maybe $550 or so, for my 55-inch Kogan TV back in 2018. The picture is quite good and haven’t encountered any kinds of issues. Honestly, I think it’s a great deal. You have to ask yourself: is the difference between a $500 TV and a $2,000 TV for the same size and resolution worth it? For a few people, perhaps, but not for me. Two years later and no issues so far. I don’t doubt people here have had issues, but it’s when it goes wrong that people speak up.

Cheers.

Oh dear just had delivery of 43 inch, yesterday…of course delay in delivery of 5 days, but have to accept this…Covid 19.
Had troubles straight away with accessing set up. Down loaded the larger version of set up but had no extra detail. Had to unplug 3 times and reset!
Only 12 hours into using, colour changes from chanel to chanel, never had this with other tv’s. I dont lnow if my eysight is failing but have an old set of glasses to see picture clearer! Put old tv in spare room( over 5 yo and speakers failing a bit) but can watch it without specs on! Seems that colour is readjusting minute by minute.
However, we wanted to delete all unwanted chanels…racing, shopping, radio…but looks like cant be done, also last night wanted to mark programs for later watching and cant do that either. At this point i have looked online to find this site…only 2 hours use…hard to read program info, lots of reflection on screen…im sure there is a lot more wrong nothing is going very good at all.
On this site the current and latest comment goes to bottom of list, would be good to be at the top for an uo to date review., but thanks for all previous comments.

Even though warranties state that they might be for 12 months, you should expect that the tv should last a lot longer than that, as does the consumer protection authority, so they will assist in a claim even if Kogan do not. Then there is the Ombudman… do not accept shoddy products guys – stick it in to them.

Relax Steve. Products we purchased from Kogan: (2) 23″ TV’s. One developed a few dead pixels. Kogan replaced it. (1) 43″ TV – 1 year, going alright so far. (1) Room air conditioner, Temperature sensor faulty. Sent back (in original packing) after 4 months and got refund. (1) Coffee jug lasted 5 years-dumped.(1) Coffee Jug Ok so far. (1) Stupid Air Fryer for wife to keep up with the Joneses. Electrically works Ok, construction looks good, But who said you can fry anything golden without basting with oil, except fish, bacon? (1) fully optioned electronic Bidet, works well, has drier, not even need for toilet paper. Absolutely as essential as a hot shower. Had no trouble with Kogan returns BUT keep your packaging complete until you have tested the product for some months.
Kogan pricing can be sneaky. Dont believe the up/down price reductions. Watch your Kogan emails daily for things you’re interested in to determine a true reduction -so when to buy.

Wow – I knew they sold rubbish, but I never thought they could be so bad for so long and still stay in business. I bought a 42 inch Kogan TV in 2012 from a guy on the Gold Coast who had bought it new, but needed some cash. It was 15 months old. It worked fine for about 2 -3 weeks, but then started to play up – the screen display became very grainy, with vertical stripes, and a “shadowing” effect.
Being just out of warrantee, I contacted Kogan to see if they could repair or replace the unit, but was informed in no uncertain terms that it was out of warrantee, and that was that.
Being an Electronics Engineer (but not really savvy about digital TV’s) I removed the back, and checked some of the obvious items such as supply voltages, checked for loose connections, looked for any signs of components which had failed, etc. There was no obvious fault, but I noticed one of the main sub-boards had a Samsung label and part number, so I rang a TV repair company to see if I could quiz a technician who could help with further diagnostics.
He advised that Kogan TV’s were known to use OEM parts from major manufacturers which had not met factory acceptance tests to go into their own brand, and so were sold off to cheap Asian manufacturers to be fobbed on to suckers like us in brands like Kogan.
After sitting in the shed for the last 8 years, I fired it up again, and the fault was still there. A quick google soon found this web site, and confirmed my suspicion that it is not worth persevering any longer, but it will be taken to the tip tomorrow morning.
LESSON. DON’T BUY ANYTHING FROM KOGAN IN THE FUTURE.

Having worked as an Advertising Manager for a number of years, I have never come across a company so HELL BENT on trying to deliver the worst customer service I have ever witnessed. KOGAN, seem to not care about their reputation at all. After over 30 emails between KOGAN and me, all we received was a a pro forma email from them nearly every time. We didn’t ask for an upgrade just a tv that works. NEVER…NEVER AGAIN WILL WE PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM KOGAN……BUYER BEWARE!! DONT PURCHASE FROM KOGAN!!

Don’t buy anything from Kogan. I purchased a Samsung Tablet. If it’s Samsung should be OK. I’ve had many Samsung products all good.
The Tablet screen Was frozen. I tried everything turned off reboot nothing fixed the problem. I called Kogan service. I suspect in Philippines. They wanted me to send pictures of frozen scene ? What does this prove After 20 emails l had to send at my cost to Melbourne. They agreed it we faulty and make a refund. But not for postage. I was very annoyed with poor service. So desided to call Samsung Australia. Called there service number took me back to a call centre in Asia. Not going enough Samsung. Kogan continued to send me emails for 2 weeks after l had received my refund. Buy from you local retailer even if you pay a little more.

Bought 24 inch kogan 2 volt Tele for my boat 6 years ago, still going great, replacing it with smart tv from kogan, 12 v again, hopefully will not have above issues. 4 years ago purchased samsung phone, delivered fast, unfortunately set up instructions on screen were in Chinese, emailed kogan and had fix reply within hours, I must be one lucky bastard it seems. For home though, I would never go online for tv, be patient and wait for sales, I bought samsung smart tv 55 inch for 900.00 on black Friday sale .Betta electrical store near me is fantastic, I ring and tell them what I want and they give me timeline on when item will be on sale, he does not lose as these are manufacturer sponsored sales, wanted 2 air con’s in November, told to wait till January, saved 800 bucks plus received free installation, buy local mine is Belmont NSW..,even installed washing machine and took packaging away, stuff buying online for major appliances

I am also having trouble with my smart 40″ Kogan tv. For the first 5 weeks it would turn itself off. After turning power off and then on at the wall I had to wait for it to reset. Sometimes I would lose the picture but still had audio. Now the colours on the screen are out of kilter and I have continuing closed caption when I turn to free to air. Kogans help desk told me they would have a look at the tv….luckily we kept the packaging, but it would take 2 weeks for tech’s to confirm a problem. If the problem was on our side then we would be up for costs for the report and couriers. I asked for a replacement tv or a loan tv but was told this wasn’t possible. NOT GOOD ENOUGH KOGAN.

Wow, I wish that I had read this forum 3-4 years ago. Bought a 40 inch LED with an extended warranty that expires in October 2021. This TV started playing up this year, so in a way I got more out of the TV than most owners. The shite is that the TV was so old, they no longer have the motherboards for it but this took about 4 weeks to find out. However, we still had a somewhat functional TV. Kogan said that they would replace the TV with a more current but smart upgrade at no cost to me but my option was limited to 1 type of TV or a 6 month credit. I opted for the former, thinking that the upgrade would be a lucky break. Not to be! Took 4 weeks to get a replacement after they picked up the old one!
This new TV is now a few weeks old, exhibits vocal lag, the head phone jack stopped working and a few other glitches. Contacted support and they suggested updating the firmware, resetting TV to default factory settings etc but to no avail. Now they want the TV to be examined to work out the fault before taking the next steps ie returning, replacement etc.

I can concur with the awful customer service with kogan. Fortunately I learned the simple way by purchasing a pair of Havaianas rubber thongs (that were half price on kogan’s website). They couldn’t even get this correct.

What I received by courier delivery was one size foot differing from the other (ie size Left 11.5 & Right 12) . Well after talking to their customer service, I would rate it as the worst ever in the history of online purchases. And this was in 2016. The kogan gent told me that I was only allowed to send them a “video” of proof of the problem BEFORE they would accept a return. No photos would be accepted. The kogan chap also asked if they still fit OK, and if they were wearable, maybe I could just wear them as an odd set & basically put up with odd set, since they were half the normal price. This was not advertised on their website – they were not advertised as defective or 2nds – WTF?

The fact they wouldn’t accept any photos as proof of the problem was enough for me to think they are retail scam artists. They basically made the customer return process so drawn out and entirely convoluted that after a long grind process – for a reason: – that I would eventually “give up” and not bother with the return. Which is what I did as they only cost $15. It woulf have taken me 3 hours to arrange a return so not worth it.

There is an online thing these days called “bought item attrition” or wearing down the purchaser’s will. I have found many EBAY sellers use this system. It’s like this, if they sell enough volume of a crappy cheap defective items knowingly, the chances of people bothering to not return defective goods still means the seller will sell enough items to make a profit, even if some people do ask for an exchange or return.

The information on this site is invaluable and thanks for taking the time to comment. Consumer protection is vital in this current on line environment.

I contemplated purchasing from Kogan for the first time, read the general reviews which averaged at 3.5 and emailed them to ask what they were doing to lift their ratings. Response was pretty arrogant so I wiped Kogan off my list of likely places to buy on line.

I agree with the old axiom that you get what you pay for. Price is one of the questions and after sales support is another. I buy all of my electronic components on line, but for serious larger purchases, I look for a local company that cares about its reputation and that starts with after sales service.

Incidentally, after an experience with our old fridge, we no longer call repairmen to fix white goods. When they give up and have past their extended warranty period, we get a new one to replace it.

Wow, I’m horrified! Have just emailed, and received replies for the past 4 days from Dick Smith. Was going to purchase tonight either a 43″ or 50″. Just needed to check up what all the tech details meant. Full HD, HDR, 4K, Dolby etc… What was it that made me type into google “Is Kogan a good brand TV”? Never in a million years would I have anticipated 2,310,000 results all saying STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM KOGAN. And that took all of 0.50 seconds. In 1999 I paid $6000 for a Panasonic 52″ rear projection screen. Yeah – its big, but only when I compare it to whats available today. It still works absolutely fine. All the pixels are still good. The only shit about that TV is the fly shit we wipe off each month. Oh, and the kids ate the buttons off the remote.
A salesman trying to sell me a flat screen a few years back shared his expertise by claiming that they have a built in flaw to break down after ten years. Well, we’ve gone 20 with this and its still big… oh, I mean going well. Moral of the story, I should stick with something that has a proven history. I’ll find a flat screen Panasonic – somewhere.
The problem with us humans is that we are always after the cheapest deal. We always want to save a buck. And we are quite happy to have some other country rape and pillage their citizens to provide us with a cheap product. We are as tight as a fishes arse on cold wave not considering for one moment the consequences of our self centered-ness. So why the F are we buying Asian crap instead of making the goods we need ourselves. Sadly, there are a shit lot of unscrupulous people making a shit lot of obscene money from people ‘like us humans’.
Buy Australian Made! Buy New Zealand Made! Would solve the employment problem. Would solve the crappy product problem. Actually, would solve a lot of problems! And likely, we wouldn’t have a virus problem – if indeed there is one!

Being in Australia, we are inundated with Asian crap. Yes, buy Australian or buy NZ you say. Where are those products found?
It is because we did not take pride in our products, not withstanding the poor quality and pricing in comparison to imports, that we no longer have a manufacturing sector.
Time we brought manufacturing back into our enfold ASAP. ALL of us need to sacrifice a bit of our greed to get this underway and to be competitive…ALL OF US!

I Bought my Kogan tv in January 2020 , seen it advertised on channel 7 i think, morning show. Worst mistake ever , it’s a Kogan 55 smart HDR 4K Android tv (series 9 XU9210)
Mine keeps dropping out every time I try and watch Netflix, Foxtel or prime video. It just tries to load, give up and returns to home screen. The remote is terrible also sometimes it takes ages to change channels, or scroll thought looking at shows. Anyone thinking about buying a Kogan tv, big mistake.

I bought a, 65″ kogan in October 2019. All of a sudden (February 2020) the TV is displaying “no signal” on the screen. I have factory reset, pulled the plug, checked all cables and have now contacted support (I told them what I’ve done and they came back with a manual and asked me if I had done everything I just told them I did) so I am waiting for a second response. Reading this forum now, I will report to ombudsman if no response

I wish I had read this before I purchased my Kogan 50″, OMG what a nightmare, will be in the middle of watching a show (which I can only do via the net as the TV won’t pick up any channels) and it will switch off, or I will get some message on it. Cannot attach the DVD player, NO SOUND. Have to keep logging into my channels daily.
So now I am stuck with a DUD TV and no avenue to get a refund. There goes that hard earned money

There is not one good word said about Kogan tvs here. I agree, I bought my 49″ (not smart) tv some years ago. Talk and video were not synchronised so they told me to download firmware, that didn’t work, the firmware wasn’t there so they then sent it on a pen usb and it sort of mostly fixed the problem. I am older so my eyesight isn’t too good but I got used to the poor screen quality. It has some benefits, extra hdmi and usb ports and chromecast works with it. A few days ago it began behaving badly. Turn it on, all good, 5 mins later it turned off. It did that every time, then the sound failed, so I had to press the mute twice and then the sound returned. Finally the remote fell apart. No chance putting that back together. I don’t know what to get next. I also have an LG and they are hopeless too. Mine is 4 years old and I cannot watch Netflix or Stan when I want. I have to log into my wi fi as it just disconnects at will. Then sometimes buffering starts and just keeps rolling, or the audio keeps going but the video has stopped (frozen) and turning off does not work either, sometimes. Also, with LG they don’t let you load some apps like yahoo7. Everything works well if I use my chromecast on the LG (they told me this would not work on their tv) the only explanation I get is ‘your tv is very old’.
What brand should I buy that is not in the thousands?

My 2 years old TV Agora Smart 4K 55” started to have problem a month ago. TV slowly turned off its functions from connecting to the internet to shutting down the whole TV. I emailed support team to look for solution and was instructed to install firm ware. Thought it would be a solution but i have been struggling to make all work. My TV works now, internet connected but youtube still does not, i almost can not watch moving pictures by using internet like usual. Now, I am waiting and hope that the last bit of my updating would respond this problem. I feel regret now i guess.

Sounds to me that Kogan needs to be sued by a class action lawsuit. There seems to be enough highly annoyed people that have been treated very badly. You people need to get organised and form a class action with a reputable “no win no fee” lawfirm like Slater & Gordon or any other lawyers with the same service .

Kogan brand would have made a killing selling these TVs with all these faults. They are sitting on a huge wad of cash from their shady dealings. Dont let them get away with it.
Individually you are not going to win but stick together and you’ll have a fighting chance. When it comes into the news that Kogan are ripper offers then they will have to stop it

No contact number any more. You cannot talk to a real person. If you want to email your complaint again you go to the bottom of the queue. Worst company ever. In January ’19 Kogan took over from Apple as the worst company for complaints in Australia. How’s that for service?! I urge people to make a product review. ( I realised first day that big colour issue. I have a 15 year old samsung with better colour.) They responded to my review by their usual format ‘so sorry, blah blah…keep reading our emails to resolve issue..” when no emails have been sent. A very expensive lesson.

The poor customer service and lack of interest in any defects is truly unacceptable in online retail. I would strongly advise purchasing from other sources unless you are prepared to take a lot a pain with any problems. They sent me the wrong item then spent 6 weeks arguing with me about it’s return even though I had written proof from them of the item I had actually ordered.

I bought a Kogan KALED55XXXTA online 18 months ago. The contrast was terrible but it was still usable. The 2 weeks ago, it powered up with the white Kogan splash screen and every 5 seconds it would blank out and display the splash screen again in an endless cycle. The TV will not respond to any commands form the remote or the TV controls. I have tried contacting the http://www.help.kogan.com site several times and left messages describing the problem. The site says somebody will contact me with a response. No response. The telephone support from Kogan is only interested in selling mobile phones and completely ignores TV support. If anybody is buying a TV I would suggest pay another 10% more and get a decent machine from LG, Samsung or Sony.Or even HiSense or TCL.

I have never experience a brand with total disregard for after sales service as Kogan. How Kogan can live in the Australian consumer environment is beyond me.I hope all disgruntled customers will air their grievances just like I am doing.

Kogan are THIEVES.

As confirmed by email from them, if they accept the return of your TV, they will give you an in-store credit, WHICH EXPIRES AFTER 6 MONTHS.

What does that mean? They will forfeit your credit.

Received my Kogan 55 ” HDR 4K TV today after 2 weeks chasing up the courier (TOLL) who couldn’t locate it despite telline me EVERY DAY I would receive it the next one.

Verdict: It is bad. The image is blurry, the colours are uneven and the sound is straight out of a can.

Remember the horrible TV you had in that cheap roadside motel room? Yes, that is the one.

I found this thread trying to found out what my rights were regarding returns.

I too would be happy to pay to send it back to get a refund, like you would expect from any retailer when unsatisfied.

What I am reading is that it is not possible, which means I am stuck with this piece of rubbish.

Very disappointed.

It is not the first time I have had issues with Kogan but I gave them the benefit of the doubt despite their painful customer service. This time I won’t.

It is the last time I deal with them. And I will be spreading the word.

Please don’t take a chance as you WILL be disappointed.

My Kogan 52″ Curved 4k failed to work from first use and they had the cheek to get me to do firmware updates, which failed to make it work. If I was a pensioner with no tech savvy then how would I have been able to sort this! Now 6 emails later they will not respond to advise on collection of the faulty TV. There are no contact numbers that allow you to speak to a human and I’m now at the point where I need to go legal on them. Costly, but they cannot get away with this extremely poor service. I just got my Kogan 65″ 4K LED TV (Series 8 JU8000)

DELIVERY
Delivery was a big issue. Each item (TV and Wall Mount Bracket) was dispatched by different couriers, but was advised of that only after confirmation of the order. The nearest location to my home that Kogan would deliver to is Tullamarine and meant a return trip by me 80km each way to collect from there. Incorrect Australia Post tracking number was provided for the Wall Mount bracket, and because of that I needed to make 2 trips to Tullamarine (unable to redirect it without the correct tracking number).

PICTURE
From the website:

A 4K television is the only way to truly experience films the way their makers designed them to be seen; reproducing all the subtle detail and texture of the original image with an intense depth that draws you into the picture. Colours reach their full potential, with every blend and tonal shift appearing bright and brilliant on the screen.

This description is downright false. Colours are washed out and varies between channels.

SOUND
I did not buy it for the sound, but I did not expect it to be this bad. Horrible to even hear it, hard to understand. In another (smaller) TV which has similar speakers inside has at least an equalizer enabling me to make the sound tolerable. This one only has treble and bass adjustment
which does very little.

This has to go back.

Currently the website contains this statement:
> We are unable to accept this product for return under the terms of our Returns Policy for ‘change of mind’ purposes.

At the time I ordered mine, there was no such statement. Besides there are statutory rights.

Now they want me to take a video or photo from the screen. For starters I don’t have a decent camera and a photo will not show the louzy picture. They can say my camera is faulty (which it is).

I read some reviews, wished I had read these.

Reply
Sean McKellar October 18, 2018 at 6:34 am

The sound on mine is also incredibly shit, but you do get used to the shit-ness over time. It’s also incredibly difficult to take a photo of the screen, as most cameras will adjust and make the screen look better than it does in reality.

It’s too late for us, but warn your friends and your family. At least we can save them!

Luke Parsons October 1, 2018 at 7:56 am

Thanks for the confirmation that they sell junk TVs. I will continue to save for a genuine Samsung TV instead. Even a Hisense seems like a better choice. At least buying from a brick and mortar store, I could easily return it

On another note, Kogan is still bound by Australian Consumer Laws. If you’ve gone through their standard complaint or repair process and still not happy, then you have the right to a refund or a repair on YOUR TERMS, not theirs. If they try to squirm out of your terms, just get fair trading involved.

Reply
Sean McKellar October 18, 2018 at 6:31 am

You’re right about the returns – with something like a TV it is a massive issue. You could go for a cheap brand like Hisense and Changhong from a retailer and be in an infinitely better position than me. It is easier to hold them accountable, and like you say, it’s as simple as taking the TV back and demanding a refund – which you’d definitely receive.

Reply
John March 8, 2020 at 7:47 am

Not too sure that I woul use “cheap” and “hisense” together. Lower cost maybe but I bought one and it’s awesome. It was the top rated tv on the market when I bought it and it deserved the rating.

I’ll most certainly buy another without hesitation(in fact I’m considering an upgrade in model and screen size as I type) and keep the rest of my cash on the bank

Sorry to hear of people’s plight with Kogan. I purchased my 42″ TV from them 8 years ago – there was a hiccup at the start but it was sorted relatively quickly and I have had 8 years of good viewing from it. However, it seems to have a died a natural death. My question is – is it worth repairing an 8 year old television? Is that its lifespan, done and dusted? Being a Kogan TV I would have to transport it to Melbourne and as it is out of warranty, I would be liable for costs.

Unfortunately I’d say it probably isn’t worth repairing – unless you tried taking it to a local repairman and it turned out to be something minor. Otherwise it is old technology and new 42″ sets are quite cheap – even with 4K.

Hi. Ive just purchased a kogan 58″ smart HDR 4k LED tv but after reading a lot of bad reviews I think I’ve made a mistake. Am I legally able to cancel my order? It hasn’t been shipped yet

On Trademe there is Kogan microwave brand new selling for NZ$99.00. After reading all these negative reviews I will not buy any Kogan brand products. It is better to be safe than sorry.

IWarning…
Pls do not ever attempt website for their product..anything goes wrong you are better off without it..kogan tv is one of them..there is so much negative blog about this but i miss out. Kogan tv is a defective and faulty tv and mine broke down in one month. Dont be fooled by the function and price..it will not work.

Don’t buy online kogan TV..save a little longer to buy a store brand TV.

I would NOT recommend Kogan either. I bought a 55″ Kogan with 4K capability. Guess what? I need a Chromecast to stream Youtube or Netflix – it won’t work on the native TV. Not only that, but the remote control is dodgy – and by that I mean it often simply does not work – I have to turn it off via the power on/off button. Regarding the non-streaming capability, many emails and calls to Kogan resulted in them advising me to download updated software – guess what, it didn’t work and still doesn’t. Would I buy a Kogan again? – never in a million years.

Thinking of purchasing tv from Kogan ,but reading customer views ,perhaps not a good move .guess Kogan company do not read customer reviews , so expect service will not change ! PS this would be normal practice of business standards of today ,So suck it up Buttercup you have done your dough !!
